International Conference on Tourism Development
During a recent conference hosted by the Municipality of Kythira, focusing on “Tourism Development and Carrying Capacity of Infrastructure: Theoretical, Scientific, and Practical Approach,” Member of Parliament for the Dodecanese and Chairman of the Committee of Regions, Mr. Manos Konsolas, delivered a keynote address. He urged a significant transformation in tourism strategies, cautioning against complacency with historical trends that have shaped the industry for the past three to four decades.
Need for a Shift in Tourism Strategy
Mr. Konsolas highlighted the necessity for the tourism sector to reevaluate its approach by considering global trends and pressing issues like climate change. He pointed out that a failure to adapt could jeopardize the vitality and sustainability of tourism moving forward. The MP identified inaction and a passive, “autopilot” mindset as critical threats to the future of tourism in the region.
Understanding Sustainable Tourism
In his remarks, Mr. Konsolas elaborated on the principles of sustainable tourism, emphasizing that the future is not an abstract notion but a tangible reality that can emerge sooner than anticipated. He warned that excessive visitor concentration in specific destinations can deplete infrastructure, natural resources, and overall quality, ultimately reducing visitor satisfaction in both the short and medium term.
Rational Management of Resources
He argued that sustainability is inherently tied to the responsible management of natural resources and the development of energy-efficient infrastructures within tourism businesses. This includes creating new systems for energy and water supply in major tourist areas. According to Mr. Konsolas, the essence of sustainable tourism lies in enhancing quality.
Importance of Studying Carrying Capacity
The MP called for updated research on the carrying capacities of various destinations, suggesting that the insights gained from such studies should inform and refine spatial planning for tourism areas.
Framework for Sustainable Tourism Development
Mr. Konsolas outlined key principles for establishing a model of sustainable tourism development. These include:
– Promoting economic sustainability through targeted investments aimed at enhancing quality and diversifying the tourism product. This encompasses various forms of tourism such as cultural, historical, medical, sports, gastronomic, diving, and conference tourism at national, regional, and local levels.
– Enhancing the competitiveness of tourism enterprises by integrating them into the digital and green economies, which can lower operating costs. Digital transformation is crucial for improving services and minimizing the environmental impact of tourism.
– Addressing the impacts of climate change, such as coastal erosion and rising temperatures, which necessitate increased energy and water resources.
– Improving tourism education to meet the challenges posed by climate change and the diversification of tourism offerings. This includes developing new educational programs and providing ongoing training for industry professionals.
– Creating a cohesive European island policy that integrates tourism-related policies and actions for island regions to foster sustainable development.
